Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko is a certified Thoracic Oncologist with more than 40 years of experience. He co-developed the surgical technique of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for the artificial heart-lung transplant.

Educational Background
Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko started his primary education in Vienna. In 1978, he received his medical education from the Medical University of Vienna. He went to Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong for his research. Dr. Walter also did his research internship at Toronto General Hospital in Canada. Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko practiced as a thoracic surgery specialist at AKH Vienna Hospital. Later on, he went to Papworth Hospital Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where he served as a thoracic surgeon. He has been a visiting Professor at leading academic institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, Cleveland, Kopenhagen, Rome, and Zurich. He also worked in the leading institute in the USA, Massachusetts General Hospital, and also did his research along with the service. He also served in Wiener Privatklinik as a thoracic specialist and clinical oncologist. Currently, Dr. Walter is associated with AKH Vienna General Hospital and is Head of the Department of the Thoracic Surgery Unit. Walter Klepetko is the Director of the Vienna International Center for Thoracic Oncology (VICTO). Request a call 1989: Prof. Dr. Walter Klepetko initiated the Vienna Lung Transplant Program with over 100 performed transplants per year. Today it is considered as a worldwide leading lung transplant program. He also introduced extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for heart and lung transplants. This technique is very effective these days and is performed as a replacement for open surgery. Dr. Walter has also performed lung transplants for the famous three-time world champion in Formula One, Niki Lauda.
